IN DIVIDEND The total number being split or divided (inside the bracket). ANS QUOTIENT The answer or result of division (on top of the bracket). 2 THE LONG DIVISION ALGORITHM MNEMONIC TO REMEMBER THE 4 STEPS: Does Madre Sell Baliadas? D STEP 1 Does → DIVIDE Divide the divisor into the first digit or number. "How many times does 5 fit into 12?" (2 times) 12 ÷ 5 = 2 M STEP 2 Madre → MULTIPLY Multiply the quotient digit by the divisor. "Multiply 2 × 5 = 10 and write it below." 2 × 5 = 10 S STEP 3 Sell → SUBTRACT Subtract the product from the dividend number. "Subtract 12 - 10 = 2 to find what's left." 12 - 10 = 2 B STEP 4 Baliadas → BRING DOWN Bring down the next digit next to the remainder. "Bring down 0 to make 20, then repeat!" Drop 0 ↓ 20 ↻ REPEAT OR REMAINDER Repeat D-M-S-B for the new number until no digits are left. ✓ If no numbers remain and difference is 0, you're done!
